Winter Is The Colds Season Colds are a self-limited illness from which virtually all people recover in a few days. The duration and severity of a cold varies from one person to another and also varies in the same individual over time.
“I don’t like my physician” said one of the mothers at the playground where our kids play together. I asked her what is wrong with her physician and she said: ”He doesn’t want to give me antibiotics when I have cold and I know if I take antibiotics the cold will go away faster!”
She said that once she had a big party and had to feel good by the next day and he still didn’t give her antibiotics. She was sneezing and coughing during the party just because of him. She was sick for 5 days instead 2 as she thinks she would be if he gave her antibiotics on the first day of her symptoms as she requested. Another time when she had cold she was going to visit her grandmother. She wanted antibiotic to make sure her grandmother doesn’t get her symptoms. I wanted to tell her that antibiotic would not prevent spreading of the viral infection and I have tried to explain to her that antibiotics will not help if you have a viral infection, but she didn’t want to hear it. Not because she knows better than her physician but because she was not sure that viruses and bacteria are not the same. More important is that the treatment is different.
